Aurelio Blasco, managing director of FCC Ambito, new chairman of ASEGRE
The Association of Special Resources and Waste Management Companies (ASEGRE) has appointed Aurelio Blasco, the managing director of the Industrial Waste Division at FCC (FCC Ámbito) since 2003, as chairman. The new chairman replaces Santiago Ortiz who held the position during 2014.
With a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Barcelona, the new ASEGRE chairman has carried out his professional career in the waste and water treatment sector for over 30 years, 26 of which have been spent with FCC. Furthermore, Blasco holds a Master's degree in General Management (PDG) from the IESE Business School.
Aurelio Blasco explained the plans ASEGRE has set for this year, all of which aim to improve the situation regarding special waste management and recovery of contaminated soil. Over the last five years, the decline in industrial activity, along with incorrect waste management due to a lack of control by the public authorities, has caused activity to fall by nearly 50% and the loss of half of all jobs.
The new chairman's main task is to collaborate as extensively as possible with the authorities in order to define some nationally-applicable environmental inspection criteria, a key objective to control waste traceability. Another of ASEGRE's main challenges is to change the responsibility of the waste producer so that the waste can be fully treated by them.
For Blasco, it is also necessary to standardize treatment in the whole country, with clarity and rigour always taking precedence. For this reason, he suggests urgently homogenising environmental taxation which promotes recovery.
On the other hand, with the recent approval of the royal decrees on Waste Shipment and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), ASEGRE is going to carry out more training activities. In addition, the association cooperated extensively in drawing up the Methodological Guide for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management activities, published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.
