Director of Esther Koplowitz Centre named Chairman of the Spanish Health Ministry's Advisory Board

Juan Rodés, a hepatologist and director of the Esther Koplowitz Centre for Biomedical Research, has been appointed Chairman of the Spanish Health Ministry's Advisory Board, recently created by Health Minister Ana Mato. Including Rodés, Mato appointed a total of 35 healthcare professionals, researchers, economists and humanists to the Board.

The Board will address diverse issues, including advising the Minister on a definitive decision as regards making the morning-after pill available over-the-counter. The Board's Vice-Chairman will be Julio Sánchez Fierro, who worked with the Health Ministry as Under-Secretary of State for Health during the Popular Party's previous administration.

The Board also includes chairmen of several healthcare industry associations: Juan José Rodríguez Sendín (doctors); Máximo Rodríguez Jurado (nurses); Carmen Peña (pharmacists); Juan José Badiola (veterinarians); Alfonso Villa Vigil (dentists); José Antonio Martín Urrialde (physiotherapists), and Antonio Zapardiel Palenzuela (chemists).

Mato also appointed another 26 experts, including Carlos Alonso Bedate, a graduate in theology and professor at the Spanish National Research Council's (CSIC) Centre for Molecular Biology; Adela Cortina, professor of ethics at the University of Valencia; Víctor Pérez Díaz, professor of sociology at the Complutense University in Madrid; and José Luis Puerta López-Cozar, a Doctor of Philosophy with the Madrid Health Service.
