A large number of FCC employees and their families, including many children, participated in the Group's forest restoration initiative as part of the framework agreement with WWF Spain. They planted almost 300 new trees in the park.
The Madrid Southeast Regional park, located in the lower courses of the rivers Henares, Manzanares, Tajuña and Jarama, covers 31,550 hectares and spans 16 municipalities in the Madrid region.
The park is peculiar in that it is surrounded by built-up areas and industrial zones and it very close to central Madrid. Due to its orography, it is home to steppe birds such as the eagle owl and the peregrine falcon.
A total of 43 volunteers, including FCC Group employees, friends and families, travelled to Soto de las Juntas on the day.
Soto de las Juntas was operated as a mine for more than 30 years, and was acquired by Madrid's regional government in 1990 with a view to restoring its ecological functions and avoiding the loss of plant mass and highly productive soil.
Participants replaced dead trees, cleared brush, refurbished tree pits, replaced tree guards, and planted a total of 260 trees of the following species: European ash (44 trees), abele (32), poplar (27), almond (32), Portuguese oak (40), dog rose(31), blackberry (12) and kidneywood (42).
FCC Group and WWF Spain signed a cooperation agreement in 2010 to improve the planet's sustainable development. As a result of that agreement, for some years FCC subsidiary CEMUSA has been donating advertising space for Earth Hour, an annual initiative that seeks to raise awareness about taking care of the Earth and preserving scarce natural resources. FCC and WWF Spain have also held seminars on the use of certified wood.
