FCC Ámbito awarded a contract for the management of waste glass packaging for 9.25 million euros
FCC Ámbito has been awarded the tender organised by ECOVIDRIO for the management of glass packaging waste from the selective collection for the provinces of Valencia, Castellón, Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel. The award period is three years (2018-2020), during which time the company is expected to manage around 185,000 t of packaging. The sale of the scrap glass produced will generate a portfolio for FCC Ámbito of more than 9 million euros.
The glass containers shall be treated in the specific recycling facilities for this material that FCC Ámbito has in Aragón, in the towns of Muel and Cadrete, and in Puerto de Sagunto in the Valencian Community.
The treatment process consists of the elimination of all impurities in glass, such as metals, organic waste, paper, plastics, stones, ceramics and porcelain, through grinding and separation. As a result, a product called scrap glass is obtained, which meets all the quality requirements required for its later use as a raw material. Scrap glass is sold to glass container factories, where it is used to feed the ovens, reintroducing this form into the manufacturing cycle of new containers.
These facilities have operated in the sector for more than 40 years and have been dedicated from the beginning to the recycling of glass. They complement their activity offering their services to multiple industries that generate glass residues, such as glass works, bottling plants, car dismantling plants, etc., managing in total more than 120,000 t of different types of glass per year.
