Inauguration of the municipal solid waste treatment centre in Alt Empordà, province of Gerona

The Councillor for Land and Sustainability from the Regional Catalonian Government, Josep Rull, has inaugurated the municipal solid waste treatment centre in Alt Empordà, in the north-east of Catalonia. Serving part of the northern Costa Brava, it is owned by the Alt Empordà Intermunicipal Council and was financed entirely by the Agencia de Residuos de Cataluña (Catalonian Waste management agency), that belongs to  the Territory and Sustainability Department, for some €24 million.

FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand for FCC Environment), in a JV with another company, is the concessionaire for the project and will operate it for 15 years. The company was represented at the inauguration by Jordi Payet, General Director of FCC Medio Ambiente.

This facility will handle the non-selective fraction, until now sent directly to a sanitary landfill, with mechanical and biological treatment, as well as organic waste, once selective waste collection has been rolled out across the Alt Empordà area. This will reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill site and will improve the disposal conditions. The centre will allow recovering all possible recycling material before landfilling, thus lengthening the site’s lifespan.

With an annual treatment capacity of 60,000 tonnes of the residual fraction and 10,000 tonnes for the organic fraction (FORM), the plant will serve part of the northern Costa Brava. The area has 140,000 inhabitants rising substantially in the summer due to tourism.
