New passenger controls in the EU - Schengen Area
On 22 February 2017, the European Parliament and Council in Brussels approved amendment 2015/0307 (COD) PE-CONS 55/16 modifying Regulation (EU) 2016/399 to strengthen security controls with the consulting of relevant databases at foreign borders. The new regulation can be found at:
http://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/PE-55-2016-INIT/en/pdf
It requires a change in the types of controls made at exterior and interior borders, which change from being “routine” for nationals of the member states to “systematic,” the same as those currently made for foreigners.
For this reason, passengers entering or leaving the Schengen Area must expect delays and an increase in passport control points at the entry and exit of the Area due to the implementation of new security measures that come into force on 7 April. There will be stricter identity controls even for EU citizens. The police will systematically consult the national, Interpol and EU police databases during the passport control as well as making the routine checks (validity and authentication of passports, as well as checking that the person matches the photograph in the document). The use of a biometric passport is recommended.
The new measures will be applied in airports, ports and railway stations, including for Eurostar trains.
