Rafael Montes inaugurates third season of Friday lectures at Nuestra Casa retirement home in Villalba

Rafael Montes, Honorary Chairman and director of FCC, gave a brilliant presentation entitled "Flying with butterflies and moths" at the Nuestra Casa retirement home in Villalba. Inaugurating the third season of lectures, Montes offered a detailed account of these fascinating insects.

Over the course of almost one hour, Montes gave an entertaining description of the life of butterflies and moths, which he described as "marvellous" and "an example for humans". After discussing the various species of butterflies and moths, with particular emphasis on the Spanish Moon Moth (known in Spanish as the "Isabella" moth, apropos of which he recounted an amusing anecdote about Queen Isabella II of Spain), Montes discussed the species' geographical distribution.

In the lively Q&A session that followed, members of the audience asked about the average lifespan of moths and butterflies, the species that can be found in the environs of Villalba (such as the Seven Peaks area of the Madrid mountains), and the origin of the Silk Road from the Orient. Montes made only one request of the audience: "that they show respect and affection for butterflies and moths".

He concluded by detailing the reason for his interest in and extensive knowledge of these insects. Something as simple as the basis of knowledge itself: wondering why. One factor is that butterflies and moths have survived in their current form for thousands of years, in contrast with other more powerful animals.
