Regional and local authorities visit works on the 'Eje Lo Marcoleta' project in Quilicura, Santiago de Chile

On 19 March, the Mayor of Santiago, Claudio Orrego and the Mayor of Quilicura, Juan Carrasco, paid a visit to the FCC-led 'Eje Lo Marcoleta' project underway in the metropolitan region of Santiago, and highlighted how the project can improve the citizens' quality of life.

The project aims to connect Avenida Lo Marcoleta with Route 5 North by means of a low level crossing which will decongest traffic between Lo Echevers and Route 5. Construction comprises two stages: from the construction of a new route connecting Avenida Lo Marcoleta with Route 5 North, to the creation of a rainwater collection system, as well as landscaping and cycle lanes.

According to the Mayor, those who live or work in the commune spend nearly 2 hours daily by simply leaving or entering the commune, therefore "this new access to Lo Marcoleta, plus the new access to the road junction incorporated within the MOP project (referring to the renovation project of the north access to Santiago by Route 5) will mean significant improvements to our road standard". It is worth noting that this commune, home to 220,000 people, has 180 hectares of land available for construction which could accommodate 45,000 new homes in the future. Previously, Mayor Orrego had

mentioned that this project "is Quilicura's most important road works project at present" given that it will benefit close to 100,000 people, by ensuring that traffic moves steadily so as to avoid traffic jams which affect one of the largest communes of Santiago".

However, he pointed out that "we are not promising that one single street will eliminate the problems of Quilicura, but we do believe that they will be considerably alleviated".

The comments from both figures confirm the mission of FCC Construcción to be a company geared towards the development of works that offer services which improve people's quality of life.
