This initiative, which was first brought about in 1987 to celebrate the European Year of the Environment, to this day has awarded more than 600 prizes. This time around, there has been a wide range of participation from Mexican municipalities that demonstrate the close relationship between ATEGRUS and these countries by having held various Latin American Congresses since 1984 and the Industrial Cooperation Program between Europe and Latin America, ALINVEST, since 2000.

The competition is aimed at municipalities, provincial authorities, councils, communities, autonomous regions, business providing services, engineering companies, environmental consultancies, manufacturers of capital goods and installations to manage urban waste and cleaning, universities, etc.

The competition is held in a bid to assess and merit actions and works carried out to improve or protect waste management, and the general urban cleanliness of our cities and industries. It awards efforts and activities in the hope of boosting technological advancements to raise further awareness in order to continue improving our quality of life and the sustainability of our cities and industries.

Cities and municipalities where FCC Medio Ambiente operates awarded with Escobas de Platino [Platinum Broom Awards]: City Council of San Sebastian: For the substantial provision of electric vehicles to clean the city, which in turn reduced annual CO2 emissions by 140 tonnes.

City Council of Oviedo: For continuously improving its service quality, enhancing the mechanisation of works using cutting edge, soundproof and high performance technology that is fully tailored to the structure of the city.

City Council of Vigo: For removing glass collection containers from the old quarter, providing catering establishments with small capacity containers that are collected by a special vehicle at a set time, enabling glass recycling in the sector.

Councils and municipalities where FCC Medio Ambiente operates awarded with Escobas de Oro [Golden Broom Awards]: Provincial Council of Granada: For Ecocentral Granada, a facility installed for the purpose of treating waste coming from collective domestic pick-up. Modernising and automating the facilities has significantly increased the ratios of the recovery of recyclable materials contained in municipal waste.
