The FCC Construcción project “general conections on the right of the Ferrol estuary” accésit San Telmo awards 2019
The FCC Construcción project “general conections on the right of the Ferrol estuary” gets the second prize in the San Telmo 2019 awards, from the Association of Road, Channel and Port Engineers of Galicia.
This action has consisted in the construction of a new general sanitation system, capable of collecting and managing the wastewater generated by the nearly 85,000 inhabitants living in the urban area of Ferrol and Narón, and transporting them to the pumping station of A Malata, from where they are sent to the WWTP of Cabo Prioriño.
The new infrastructures have been projected through an integrated environmental design. In total, eleven storm tanks (30,060 cubic meters), a flow regulation station at the port and an extensive network of large collectors with more than 25 kilometers in length have been built, of which almost 40% correspond to old pipes that have been reused after applying modern rehabilitation techniques.
With the implementation of this infrastructure, a delicate environmental situation of the Ferrol estuary is solved, marked by the strong degradation of its marine environment, as a consequence mainly of the poor state and deficiencies that the sanitation infrastructure of its right bank presented.
The direct discharge of wastewater into the estuary at a multitude of points along its coastline is avoided, in which the old rivers had become true collectors, buried mostly by urban growth. A solution is given to the regulation and management of urban runoff waters in rainy weather, loaded with pollutants after running through an eminently urban area.
