FCC Construcción and FCC Industrial's project ‘Comprehensive Renovation and Departmental Building (nZEB) of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Zaragoza’ wins the Garcia Mercadal Award for best project. The renovation project included three fundamental interventions: renovation of the historic faculty building; demolition of the Philology pavilion and its replacement with a new building; and urbanisation of the surrounding area.

The project has minimised the building's energy requirements, making it a building at the forefront of European requirements in the construction sector. The new construction has a thermal envelope that effectively reduces heat loss in winter, while in summer heat is dissipated, reducing cooling requirements and improving user comfort. Building on this energy balance, hybrid solar panels have been integrated, capable of supplying hot water and electricity thanks to solar radiation.

New technologies will help reduce CO2 emissions through monitoring systems that enable intelligent use of the building, enhancing user comfort with minimum consumption. Specifically, the lighting system will be able to self-regulate according to the existing natural lighting and the occupancy of the space. Electric vehicle charging systems and bicycle parking systems have also been incorporated to ensure sustainable mobility access.

FCC Construcción has carried out works in Zaragoza such as the University Clinical Hospital, the Fire Museum, the new Ibercaja office and conference building, the Zaragoza Expo Aquarium, the Monasterio de Veruela National Parador and the School of Arts and Design. In terms of civil engineering, the FCC Group's construction division has built the city's tramway, the Fuentes bridge, the La Loteta and Barasona dams, the tunnels for the Delicias high-speed train station, the Water Park and the Ronda Hispanidad ring road, among other projects.
