The Port of Torredembarra presents a unique project in the world: the first artificial underwater calcium carbonate mountain
The Port of Torredembarra, 20% concessioned by FCC, presents a unique project in the world: the first artificial underwater calcium carbonate mountain.
The first mountain built with calcium carbonate in the world has been designed and installed on the seabed of Torredembarra. The intention is to revitalize the seabed and promote water tourism.
The Biotop mountain, the first and most ambitious to date. The objective is to create new underwater life in the most natural and appropriate environment that human beings can create within the sea.
Once the conglomerate of biotopes has been completed, buoys attached to the bottom will be placed to which boats can moor to avoid degradation of the sea floor by anchoring.
The Mediterranean Sea is a vital asset in socioeconomic terms and for its marine biodiversity for Spain.
According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), there are more than 17,000 marine species and a wide variety of marine ecosystems. These populations are being decimated by invasive species —estimated at 1,000—, which are modifying marine habitats and are concentrated in the warmer areas.
And it has been found that it is the sea that is suffering the worst consequences of climate change. With temperatures rising 20% faster than the global average and sea level rise expected to exceed 1 meter by 2100, the Mediterranean is becoming the fastest warming and saltiest sea on our planet, according to a WWF study published in 2021.
