The purpose of the visit was to check the current status of the project, which involves the construction of a new Southern Access road to Alto Hospicio from National Highway 1, by means of a comprehensive solution that is focused on a stretch approximately 4.9 km in length to build a road that provides the structure for the city of Iquique by-pass, thus improving connections between the economic poles of this Free Zone, which is an essential ingredient in the country’s trading relations along the American Pacific rim.

With an investment of 27 million Euros, the project includes clearing land along the hillsides across the entire route, building 36,000 m2 of MSE (mechanically stabilised earth) walls over a length of 4,200 metres, and intercepting and re-routing the FERRONOR rail link over the new road at km 2.781 of the route.  The project is currently at the start of the building phase and thus approximately 6% complete.
