The Wanda Metropolitano, winner of the first prize of the Spanish Association of Structural Engineering (ACHE), in the building category.
The stadium, built by FCC Construcción, occupies a total area of 88,150 square meters and has a capacity to accommodate more than 68,000 fans, distributed in general capacity and VIP area. In addition, it has more than 1,000 parking spaces for fans inside the stadium and 3,000 outdoor parking spaces.
The distribution of the new stands makes it possible for fans and/or spectators to be close to the field of play. The new stadium has three new “T”-shaped stands, a low stand made up of 28 stands at the end and in the preferred areas, a middle stand of 13 stands for VIPs with direct access from the outside, and finally , a tall grandstand supported by a perimeter building with 32 tiers, where the public entrances, VIP boxes and complementary services are located.
Special mention must be made of the roof of the stadium, made up of a steel structure weighing some 6,336 tons, tensed with radial cables and joined with a membrane that occupies an area of 83,053 square metres.
The membrane is made up of 720 PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) panels, weighing 92 tons. The roof covers the stands and will help 96% of the seats to be protected from the rain. This constitutes a unique and differentiating element from the rest of European sports facilities designed in recent years.
