FCC makes progress on the construction of towers on the Gerald Desmond Bridge

Works on the Gerald Desmond Bridge have entered into their most crucial phase with the construction of the two single shaft towers stretching approximately 155 metres in height. The towers will be used to underpin the cable-stayed part of the 305-metre-long span deck.

Assembly of one of the two launching gantries has just been completed. These gantries will facilitate the construction of the approach viaducts to the main bridge, which will be constructed span by span. Assembly of the second gantry stands at 25% complete.

Manufacturing of the metal deck, which will strengthen the main bridge structure, will commence in February next year.

65% of the foundations are currently completed; this is expected to reach 90% before next summer, leaving the other 10% to be finished during the last phase of the works as a result of the conflict that is generated with regard to current structures.

Generally speaking, the project currently stands at an estimated 41% complete.
