FCC Construcción, a pioneering company in innovation, develops the project "Digital Railway Infrastructures", within the work "lowering of platforms for the dual train of the Red Tram D'Alacant".

The project contemplates the adaptation of the platforms, increasing the capacity of the station, guaranteeing the basic conditions of accessibility and non-discrimination for people with disabilities and allowing the use of dual units. Visibility conditions and safety conditions at pedestrian crossings are also improved. In addition, as far as the environment is concerned, the aim is to improve the energy efficiency of the station's lighting system and consequently reduce electricity consumption.

3d design and visualization - Construction monitoring

Once the work was awarded, a pre-construction model was drawn up from the 2D plans of the project and the project-budget parameters were included, among others, and which served to check the viability of the solution, and on which slight adjustments. The preconstruction model has served as the basis for:

• Monthly monitoring of the progress of the work through monitoring models, which include parameters for certification. These models allow us to obtain the monthly measurements of all the elements modeled directly and other measurements indirectly.
• The measurements obtained from the models have been included monthly in the corresponding certifications, until the final work certification is obtained.
• The model has also been used to simulate the ship's signage and make an early decision based on the different options proposed.

Tracking and updating models - Modified project

The very development of the monitoring models with their revisions lead us to obtain the As-Built progressively. A much more effective method than carrying out an As-Built in a traditional way, on the one hand, due to the reliability of the information, since it has been carried out along with the evolution of the works and, on the other hand, due to the time frame to obtain the final plans, since this is very small.

The final construction model will be used to generate a digital twin of the infrastructure, by the operator. With all the benefits that this entails at the level of asset management. The As-build BIM model will become the AIM (Asset Information Model) linked to the maintenance management software.

Benefits and potential of the project

• Obtaining the final work documentation. The plans to complete the As-Built have been extracted from the models.
• They optimize the transfer of information, in this case from the construction phase to the operation and maintenance phase. And even as a basis for new projects, such as a possible expansion and/or equipment of the same infrastructure.
• The digitization of the railway infrastructure is guaranteed and the inventory is made possible to control and manage the information of the elements that make up the work.
