FCC Construccion bets on the elimination of plastic in its port works

The construction area of the FCC Group is committed to the elimination of plastic in the different maritime works that it develops around the world.

On June 5 World Environment Day was celebrated under the slogan "A planet without contamination by plastics", with which FCC Construccion wanted to show its commitment.

The UN alerts us to the immense ecological disaster that marine pollution by plastics entails on our planet. Every year, 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the sea, and it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more tons of plastic than fish in the ocean. The objective is to raise awareness about the need to reduce the amount of plastic that is poured into our oceans, a problem that affects us all and with which we must all commit ourselves.

For years, FCC Construccion has adhered to this United Nations Global Compact and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

FCC Construccion, with the aim of being a participant in this fight against the dumping of plastics to seas and oceans, has opted to replace the plastic in all maritime works that, replacing its use with sheets of paper. The use of paper, biodegradable material in the short term, eliminates the contamination that was produced by the partial loss of the plastic layer that was detached during the processes of launching and anchoring of the drawers.

Another environmental measure carried out by the construction area of the FCC Group is the use of floating retaining barriers, used not only to retain possible accidental spills, but also for the retention of plastic materials from protections, wrappings and other waste.

With these actions, FCC has reduced the use of plastic materials and has avoided the use of 2,000 square meters of plastic sheets with high risk of pollution in our seas.
