FCC Construcción starts the R & D + i project "RESALTO", in which sustainable road elements will be developed to reduce speed
FCC Construcción is in a continuous search to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Smart Cities. The company innovates on issues of traditional construction materials, also seeking to expand knowledge on unique products that are integrated into urban roads to provide a more complete range of services to its customers.

To fulfill these strategic and commercial objectives, FCC Construcción proposes this project of sustainable road elements for speed reduction (RESALTO). Within the company's policy, the creation of value in the organization is contemplated, providing the management and services necessary to design, build and exploit infrastructures and services that contribute, in an efficient, sustainable and safe way.

This project, approved and financed by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, will be developed with the collaboration of the LEITAT technology center throughout the courses from 2018 to 2021.

Among the specific objectives of the project are:
  1.  The generation of Energy.
  • It will be based on solid state materials,
  • Designs will be studied to better integrate the speed reducing elements to maximize the generation of energy and to withstand the fatigue caused by the passage of vehicles,
  • Energy management and storage systems will be evaluated to maximize the efficiency and use of the energy generated.
  2. Security signage.
  • Intelligent activation systems of light signaling will be investigated to manage energy expenditure and at the same time facilitate their identification by drivers and pedestrians.
  3. Connectivity with the environment.
  • Communications systems with low consumption and low data transfer will be investigated,
  • Comparison of new communication protocols and emerging technologies.
To validate this new multifunction speed reducer design, FCC Construcción will build a demonstrator for its subsequent monitoring and complete the demonstrator study with a technical-economic evaluation.

The sustainable road elements for speed reduction that meet these objectives will allow FCC Construcción, and the FCC Group, to have a new line of business that complements its current services aimed at municipalities, both nationally and internationally.

Future of Smart Cities

There is a clear trend in the incorporation of ICT technologies in constructive elements to obtain intelligent systems and improve services for citizens in the "Smart Cities". Its global technology market will go from 212.3 billion dollars in 2013 to 668.5 billion in 2019, with a year-on-year growth rate of 17.9%, according to a BCC R & D report. Transportation is among the areas that are expected to be transformed by disruptive technologies. In particular, infrastructure, mobility and traffic management in cities.
