FCC Construcción completes the A-33 highway

FCC Construcción has completed the A-33 highway, in the section between Yecla and Caudete (Albacete) with Fuente La Higuera (Valencian Community). A 16 kilometer stretch that saves time by 25 minutes, reduces C02 emissions and improves road safety.

The A-33 is a very necessary infrastructure because it connects the east with Andalusia, saving time and decongesting the A-7 highway, which is the traditional route. The launch of the new section of highway will shorten the duration of the journey along the coast by 46 kilometers. This route is used mainly by trucks loaded with products destined for export, which will result in significant savings for transport companies.

During the construction of this infrastructure, FCC Construction has used a new paving technique, using a type of pavement consisting of a continuous reinforced concrete pavement 24 centimeters thick, built with the two-layer 'fresh on fresh' technique (19 cm + 5 cm). This work constitutes a real challenge in Spain since it is the first time that the continuous reinforcement technique is used with construction in two layers and with the texture of exposed aggregate, instead of the traditional firm with bituminous mixtures. This type of pavement represents a reduction in maintenance and upkeep costs.

The new 16 kilometer stretch includes four viaducts, five overpasses, eleven underpasses and a wildlife crossing. The cross section is made up of two separate carriageways with two lanes each 3.5 meters wide, an external shoulder of 2.5 meters and an internal shoulder of one meter.
