FCC Construcción completes the first underpass of the Nudo Norte

The first of the three underpasses of the Nudo Norte remodeling works carried out by FCC Construcción. This new road will allow the direct connection of road traffic between the Paseo de la Castellana with the M-30 bound for the A-1 (Burgos road) and the M-11 (fairgrounds).

The remodeling of the Nudo Norte aims to eliminate the four road braids that caused traffic jams and light and noise pollution. Last February, the upper viaduct was opened, which directly connects the M-607 with Paseo de la Castellana, while the route that will be put into service tonight is the first of the three underpasses that will run at different levels. Specifically, this new passage section will eliminate the braiding for vehicles that go to the Burgos highway and the M-11, those that run along the M-607/M-30 between Nudo Norte and Nudo de Manoteras and that go to the A-1 or continue their journey south of the M-30.

With this action, an important black spot is eliminated from the municipal road, alleviating the traffic congestion that occurs, fundamentally, at rush hour in the morning and in the afternoon, when exiting the city on the Castellana. In addition, the vehicles that circulate along Calle 30 from Avenida de la Ilustracion will benefit from the new road, since they will be able to continue circulating on the surface lanes without any interference.

The opening of this underpass will initially be used during this phase of the works to house the supply rails until the surface works have been completed. It is planned that by summer all the lanes of the M-30 in this sense will be adapted to their final position.

Previously, two weeks after the opening of this new underpass, the two lanes in the direction of the M-11/A-1/M-30 South will be recovered to join the M-30 from Paseo de la Castellana. Likewise, this action will allow the reopening of the exit lane from Paseo de la Castellana to the M-30/M-607 in the direction of Colmenar Viejo.

Track characteristics

The new underpass is 240 meters long and 7 meters wide, divided into two traffic lanes, each 3.50 meters wide. Both have a 0.5 meter sidewalk on each side. Around the middle of the development, the structure is extended along its right bank to house, at a later stage, an incorporation lane from the future Castellana Norte District from the prolongation of Agustín de Foxá and Mauricio Legendre.

It has been necessary to excavate up to 8 meters deep to execute the underpass. In relation to the screen, it is discontinuous and has been formed by piles of 0.80 meters in diameter with a separation of 1.60 m between axes, that is, 2 diameters, which is a civil engineering milestone in this type of screens in the capital.

Less time behind the wheel, reduced traffic jams and pollution

The reform of the Nudo Norte is an action carried out by the Madrid City Council that aims to eliminate traffic congestion in that area, which supports the circulation of 34,000 vehicles per day in the morning rush hour and 33,800 in the afternoon slot. The refurbishment is expected to save 31% rush hour travel time for private vehicles, a total of 3,667 hours per day. The increase in capacity at critical points and the elimination of crossings will reduce congestion levels below 70%.

The air quality of the capital will also benefit from this civil engineering work, which will reduce an average of 14 tons of CO2 per day, the equivalent of 0.5% of all gas emissions emitted by the transport sector by road in Madrid.

The Nudo Norte remodeling work is one of the commitments of the Madrid 360 Sustainable Mobility Strategy launched by the Madrid City Council. The action is carried out in a total of 150,000 square meters and is carried out with BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology.
