FCC Construcción completes the underpass of the Nudo Norte connecting the Castellana and the M-30 / Avda. de la Ilustracion
The second underpass of the Nudo Norte remodeling works has been completed by FCC Construcción. This new access that will allow the direct connection of road traffic between Paseo de la Castellana and the M-30 for vehicles bound for Avenida de la Ilustracion.
This is the second underpass of the three projected in the Nudo Norte to eliminate the braided roads that hinder fluid circulation in the area, and whose works, as explained by the delegate, will end before the end of the year 2022. In Specifically, the new underpass that opens today eliminates the intertwining between the vehicles that go through the M-30 to the M-607 (Colmenar Viejo) and those that join from the Paseo de la Castellana, through the M-30 , in the direction of Illustration Avenue.
With the opening of this new section, a black spot in the city of Madrid is eliminated and the traffic congestion that occurs during rush hours when exiting the capital via Paseo de la Castellana is alleviated. At the same time, the vehicles that circulate on the M-30 will benefit from this new connection, since they will be able to continue circulating on the surface lanes without any interference.
Characteristics of the new road
The new underpass is 469 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. It consists of a traffic lane 3.50 meters wide and two 1-meter shoulders. The new road also has a 0.75 meter wide sidewalk on each side of the road.
This second underpass has been carried out with the highest standards in urban tunnel installations. From an electrical and lighting point of view, it has emergency generators, an uninterruptible power supply system, security and emergency lighting, as well as the usual lighting to generate safe driving.
Mechanical ventilation, fire detection and protection systems, gas detection, pressurization of emergency exits, access control and gauge, as well as other security systems necessary for this type of infrastructure, have also been installed.
All these systems have been centralized through a Security and Control System (ITS) that will allow remote control of all equipment and signals from the Calle 30 Traffic Control Center, through advanced technology to provide the new road with a high level of security.
North Nude remodeling work
The reform of the Nudo Norte is one of the commitments of the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy to achieve a more sustainable city by reducing traffic congestion and thereby improving air quality.
The civil work is advanced and is based on the elimination of 4 road braids (1 upper and 3 lower) that cause traffic jams and environmental pollution, as well as light and noise. Last February the upper viaduct was opened, in May the first underpass, and today the second of the projected lower accesses opens. With the opening of the third and last underpass, the work will be completed.
The Nudo Norte supports a circulation of 34,000 vehicles per day in the morning rush hour and 33,800 in the afternoon slot. With the remodeling, it is expected that private journeys will save 31% (3,667 hours/day) by increasing capacity at critical points and eliminating crossings. As for congestion levels, they will be reduced by 70%.
Air quality will also benefit from this remodeling, since it is estimated that an average of 14 tons of CO2 per day will be reduced.
