The construction area of the FCC Group has completed the works of the Serra Grossa tunnel (Alicante), which meant that on December 18, track 2 (Lado Montaña) of TRAM D'ALACANT was put into service, within the works of the Railway Variant of Line 1 on the stretch of the Finca Adoc.

The project executed by FCC Construccion, has had an investment of 33 million euros and is a milestone in the improvement of mobility in the province of Alicante. Its purpose is to increase capacity of the current single track section existing in Lines 1 (Benidorm), 3 (El Campello), 4 (San Juan de Alicante) and the liberation of the Alicante coastline due to the fact that the current line runs parallel to the coast and this action opens a whole range of possibilities for the city of Alicante, allowing the future pedestrian path, once the same ones have been prepared.

The works consisted in the realization of a railway variant of Line 1, defined by its north side by means of a platform for double track metric gauge through a tunnel excavated in the Serra Grossa and a single-track branch between the stations of La Goteta and La Marina, the tunnel has a length of 1477 meters.

This variant has been adapted to the new security measures in tunnels and security in circulation, at both the European level and the Generalitat Valenciana, to the new security management systems of FGV, because of the transposition of the legislation and safety regulations, general regulation of circulation of FGV and the railway exploitation criteria currently in force.

This infrastructure is essential to expand the public transport service. With this new layout, through the tunnel under the Serra Grossa, it is possible to extend the frequencies of the passage of lines that connect with the north of Alicante: the L-4 in the direction of Playa de San Juan; the L-3 towards El Campello, and the L-1 to Benidorm.

With the commissioning of the tunnel, the FGV will lower the frequencies to 8 and 15 minutes, in different time zones, thus improving the connectivity of citizens and enhancing an improvement in their quality of life.
