FCC Construcción completes the construction of the first phase of the new "Muelle Baleares" in the port of Tarragona
FCC Construcción completes the construction of the first phase of the new "Muelle Baleares" in the port of Tarragona. This new dock is located next to the inner side of the fifth alignment of the “Levante del Puerto” dike, following the current Catalunya Dock.
The new pier built will support a tourist cruise terminal with the capacity to dock two large ships, greater than 230 meters. The longitudinal wall of the “Muelle Baleares”, in its first phase of development, presents a rectilinear front 461.4 meters long for berthing on its outer side and 267.4 meters for berthing on its inner side.
The structure of the dock is made up of an aligned set of 11 prefabricated reinforced concrete caissons, built using the Mar del Aneto Floating Dock, owned by FCC Construcción and which is 41.85 meters long, 16.75 meters wide and 21, 30 meters of prop. The esplanade of the new "Muelle Baleares" with an area of 31,000 square meters is formed by the construction of two dikes built by maritime and land means and the dumping of material from the dredging of the inner dock of the port.
The superstructure or girder-cantile, which is made of HA-30 reinforced concrete, extends to the full length of the quay. The bollards, the defenses, the niche stairs are placed there and together with the esplanade, the facilities and the concrete pavement make up the structure of the new “Muelle Baleares”.
This new infrastructure positions the Port of Tarragona at the center of the cruise industry, which will also directly benefit the economic and tourist sector of the territory. This new equipment arrives at the ideal time, after international cruises resumed in June, after fourteen months of standstill due to the pandemic.
FCC Construcción has developed the project that began in May 2020, in the first wave of Covid-19, overcoming all the logistical and health obstacles that were presented to it, and has ended a year and a half later.
