FCC Construcción completes the excavation of one of the tubes of the Erjos tunnel (Tenerife)

FCC Construcción has finished excavating one of the tubes in the Erjos tunnel (Tenerife). The length of the excavated tunnel is 5.10 kilometers and it would allow in the future to unite the towns of El Tanque and Santiago del Teide within the project called closure of the Anillo Insular Tenerife.

The excavation of the tunnel began in January 2021 through the south entrance and in August 2021 through the north entrance, and yesterday the meeting between the two entrances took place, with the excavated length being 3,300 meters through the south entrance and 1,800 meters through the north entrance.

The event was attended by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, the President of the Tenerife Council, the Minister of the Environment and the Mayors and Mayors of the municipalities that the tunnel crosses.

The Anillo Insular Tenerife is a fundamental infrastructure to improve mobility and connectivity between the north and south of the Island of Tenerife, as well as to alleviate traffic congestion on the TF-5 motorway in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The project consists of the construction of the section of road that closes the Anillo Insular Tenerife between the kilometer point 11,270 with the connection with the TF-5 in the town of San Juan del Reparo, in the municipality of El Tanque, and the kilometer point 22,609 with the connection with the TF-1 in Santiago del Teide.

The most important performance of the work is the construction of the Erjos Tunnel. This underground work, made up of two parallel tubes each 5.1 kilometers long, will run under the Teno Massif and will be the longest tunnel in the archipelago and one of the longest road tunnels in Spain.

This first-rate and sustainable infrastructure will enable a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and protection of the area's environment.

With the execution of the project, the road safety of users and the connectivity of the residents of the towns of El Tanque, Los Silos and Santiago del Teide will be improved. A dangerous circulatory route due to the high intensity of traffic will be transformed into a safe and sustainable route.

The new infrastructure will have a positive impact on employment and the island's economy. It will improve the productive and socioeconomic fabric of the area, allowing an improvement in the distribution channels of products and services as well as tourism in the region.
