FCC Construccion wins the Award Merit with its Mersey bridge project, in the ENR Global Best Projects
FCC Construccion has won the bridges category, the Award Merit with its Mersey River bridge project, of the prestigious ENR Global Best Projects 2018 awards.
The award ceremony took place on October 2 in New York. On behalf of FCC Construcción, he received the Francisco Esteban award, director at SSTT, and Jesus de la Fuente, director of business development at the US.
The Mersey Bridge has been built by FCC within the Merseylink Civil Contractors Joint Venture construction consortium. This work has had the support of the entire FCC Group, specifically with the Technical Services (structures and geotechnics) and the specialized company (BBR). The purpose of this great civil work, which has been recognized by KPMG among the 100 most important infrastructure projects in the world, is to relieve the congestion of the Silver Jubilee bridge, opened in 1961 and which has been the only step on the river to date. , as well as connecting this area with the main motorway network of the North West of England.
The bridge has a total length of 2,248 meters, with a central stretch of approximately one kilometer and two viaducts. This unique work has a unique design. The central pylon reaches 80 meters in height and is lower than the other two pylons, with 110 meters on the north side and 125 meters on the south side, 1,296 km of cables connected with these piles to the bridge deck have been used. The new road network includes a total of 12 bridges and seven new links, with 127,425 m3 of concrete used in the work. The work has been carried out with the highest environmental standards, the design of the bridge has followed the premise of minimal impact on the environment, 1,423,225 tons of materials have been recovered and reused in construction.
The project benefits not only the area of the Liverpool region, with a population of more than 1.6 million inhabitants, but also the northwest area of England.
Last year, the Almonte viaduct, built by FCC, was the winner of the fifth edition of the Global Best Projects, in the category of bridges and tunnels. The jury analyzed aspects such as project safety performance, innovations introduced, quality of design and construction, benefits of the project to the local community as well as the diversity of project development teams.
