FCC completes the metal structure of the Control Tower at El Dorado Airport, Columbia

FCC has finished constructing the metal structure of the Control Tower at El Dorado Airport in Columbia within 8 months.

FCC completes the metal structure of the Control Tower at El Dorado Airport, Columbia

It is the tallest and best equipped tower in the region, measuring 83 metres in height or over 90 metres if you count the antennas.  1,300,000,00 kg [sic] of steel were used to build this metal structure which is fixed on a surface larger than 2,500 metres and foundations made of pre-manufactured piles up to 45 m deep beneath ground level. The structure has been welded up to the 18 m level and bolted in from thereon after.

The diameter of the lower part of the tower's metal structure is 14.36 m and the upper part 23.36 m.

Its design meets the necessary requirements for the airport's air traffic control service, primarily critical areas, to achieve the safety, regulations and alertness demanded by the airspace users. It will also guarantee the maximum operational capacity of the airfield and will update technology to be at the global forefront.

This new control tower will comprise two cabins, one for air traffic control and another for controlling the SDPM platform, which guarantee 360-degree visibility of the airport and line of sight to the heads of each runway.

As well as the control tower, the airport will have an aeronautical management centre, which is considered as a separate unit with four buildings connected by a distribution element that serves as a connecting link whilst ensuring independence between the different building parts.

All in all, it consists of 16,300 built-upon square metres, which allow for an increase in air traffic, as well as respond to the rise in airport operations.

With this project, one of the most important aeronautical infrastructure work projects awarded by the Columbian Civil Aviation Authority, which was responsible for FCC's winning bid, the country will have a modern complex in line with future needs and challenges for the provision of air traffic services and air navigation in the continent.

El Dorado Airport, situated 15 kilometres to the west of Bogota centre, is the most important airport in Columbia. It is also Latin America's busiest cargo airport and the third busiest in terms of passenger flights, with around 20 million passengers a year.
