FCC Industrial begins the preliminary works for the construction of an EfW plant in Scotland

FCC Industrial has started the preliminary works for the construction of the incineration plant (EfW) in North Lanarkshire (Scotland), which will have a capacity of 300,000 tons. The complete development of the construction project will have an amount of more than 400 million euros.

The first phase of construction work involves ground preparation and stabilization, which involves soil removal, preparation of a development platform and the old mine surface.

Specifically, the activities include:

  • Removal of peat in the plant area (approximately 42,000 cubic meters) to enable the injection of abandoned mines.
  • The extracted peat is transferred to the peat receiving area, in order to create a new habitat that compensates for the loss of the previous one
  • Construction of a temporary access road
  • Excavation of a provisional drainage network and a settling pond, to prevent the discharge of water with suspended solids.

Subsequently, the injection works of the old coal mines will be carried out. In a second phase, the remaining peat in the plant area will be excavated and relocated to the receiving area.

The plant will be built on the existing Greengairs landfill, hence the importance of the preliminary work that FCC Industrial is carrying out. The future plant will process domestic and commercial waste from the entire region. The plant will provide around 25.5 MW of electricity and will have the potential to supply 40 MW of heat to local homes.
