Francisco Esteban interviewed on the Spanish National Radio in the Spanish program at sea

Francisco Esteban, technical director of SSTT of FCC Construcción and president of PIANC has been interviewed in the Spanish National Radio program, "Spaniards at sea". The theme of the interview has revolved on ports and climate change.

The ports of the state-owned port system, through which about 60% of exports and 85% of Spanish imports pass, are immersed in a dynamic marine and atmospheric environment, subject to the rigors of the climate system. The knowledge of it is vital in all phases of the life of a port: in that of design, conditioned by the wave, wind and other variables; during the construction, for the planning of the works and the guarantee of the safety of the workers and, finally, in the operation of the already finished infrastructures, where the adverse ocean-meteorological conditions prevent the modal transfer and even force to close the ports on certain occasions.

The sea level can rise on our coasts, having effects on the safety and operationality of our ports, and water temperatures are getting warmer, which can alter its quality within the docks. Therefore, when making long-term planning of the system, it is essential to know, in the most accurate way possible, the future evolution of these and other oceanographic and meteorological variables.

It should be remembered that FCC Construcción actively participated in the COP25 of Madrid, and more specifically in the discussion table “Accelerating Action to Build a Resilient 1.5º World”

At the discussion table, based on the work carried out in the “Navigating a Changing Climate” initiative, the three practical barriers that port operators, inland waterways and, in general of all transport infrastructure, have to overcome if They aim to implement resilient and effective adaptation measures:

  1. Face the uncertainty inherent in climate actions
  2. Understand the economic consequences of not acting, in addition to the environmental ones
  3. Dismantle the myth that adaptation to climate change is necessarily complex and expensive.
