The Environment Minister inaugurates the sea front restoration works, undertaken by FCC Construcción, in Santa Cruz de la Palma (Canary Islands)
On 16 May, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, the Environment Minister, inaugurated the sea front restoration works in Santa Cruz de la Palma (Canary Islands), which were fully undertaken by FCC Construcción.
The works comprised transforming the maritime façade of the Canary Island city and converting an area, degraded by the uncontrolled dumping of materials and sewage, into a beach that allows citizens to access the sea in safe and comfortable way.
The action plan of FCC Construcción was based on two fundamental aspects: the existing environmental situation and the physical characteristics of the resource. Prior to the action, the area was covered with large amounts of rubble, which created a platform that served for city parking.
Furthermore, the area was profoundly degraded due to the existence of wastewater treatment facilities that produced direct wastewater discharge into the sea during periods of high rainfall, as the facility did not have a separate wastewater disposal system. This situation was resolved by creating a disposal system that sent wastewater to the city treatment plant.
The restoration entailed the construction of certain maritime structures. A 450-metre long northern seawall, which acts as a breakwater and shock absorber against strong waves, was constructed. A 275-metre long southern seawall was built to protect the beach and an underwater bank, closing off the area between both seawalls, was also built, containing the new shoreline.
The Santa Cruz de la Palma beach has 740,000 square metres of sand that was brought up from the seabed by suction dredgers. The beach has an area of thick pebbles that stop the water from affecting nearby houses during the storm season, ensuring citizen safety.
There is no doubt that the environmental action undertaken by FCC Construcción is a milestone for the city, having a direct impact on the tourism sector and finding a compromise between environmental protection and economic development.
