The remodeling of the Plaza de España, awarded by the XVI Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism
The remodeling of the Plaza de España, carried out by FCC Construcción, has been awarded one of the prestigious prizes of the XVI Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism. More than 500 built projects had been submitted to this call, of which the 20 best have been awarded.
The reform has given rise to a greener, sustainable and accessible environment that integrates all modes of mobility, a great transformation that has been possible by moving traffic to the lower level and gaining that surface space for pedestrians. The new plaza connects valuable spaces until now segregated from each other such as the Temple of Debod, the Sabatini gardens, the Casa de Campo or Madrid Río and emerges as a new tourist center of the city and an important cultural focus thanks to the integration in the project of the archaeological remains found during the work.
This award adds to the already long list of recognitions obtained by the new Plaza de España at both a national and international level: Ciudad 2021 Madrid Next award awarded by the Open House Foundation; award for the Best Work 2022 of the Madrid Demarcation of the College of Civil Engineers; Albert Serratosa City and Territory 2023 award from the Foundation Caminos Spain; project selected at the Rosa Barba International Landscape Biennial 2023; International Architecture Awards 2023 from the Chicago Athaeneum.
