The tunnel boring machines used by FCC in the Riyadh Metro appear in 'World Tunnelling' magazine

Jaime Freyre, country manager of FCC Construcción in Riyadh and director of the FAST consortium, gave an interview to 'World Tunnelling' magazine in which he spoke about the progress of the metro being built by FCC Construcción in the country.

According to Freyre, at the moment the 7 tunnel boring machines are working on Saudi soil, excavating tunnels up to 35 kilometres long and 30 metres below surface. The 178 kilometre-long system will have 85 elevated, surface and underground stations.

Tunnel boring for line 1 (blue line), which will be 38 kilometres long, began in July. It is hoped that "Mneefah", the name of the first tunnel boring machine for this line, progresses at a average rate of 100 metres per week with an end date around mid 2016. Therefore, it is expected that construction of the metro will be finished before 2018.
