In line with its environmental policy and undertaking, Matinsa has signed a partnership agreement with the University of Alcalá de Henares for the research and development of an alternative herbicide to glyphosate-based products, which although commonly used at present have an uncertain future, because of potentially harmful effects on people's health.

The research is based on wood vinegar, a by-product of charcoal-production processes, and will be the starting point for several scale RDI projects with a wider scope.
