Murcia tram acquires 100% green energy and bets on energy efficiency

Tramway of Murcia has linked its electricity demand to other transport operators, among which is the Málaga Metro and Zaragoza Tramways, among others. The process has been attended by five electricity retailers and the winner, Naturgy, will be the one who provides them with 100% renewable electricity for consumption during 2020 and 2021.

The tender process has been managed by Grupo ASE, adding the volume of electricity of five railway companies. It amounts to 350 gigawatts / hour and has an estimated total cost of 46 million euros for the next two years. This energy will be 100% green. That is, it will have the certificate of renewable origin issued by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC), which is the one that accredits the renewable origin of electricity production in Spain.

Tram of Murcia has been operating the transport service since May 2011, improving its energy efficiency ratio every year, by reducing consumption. In addition, since 2013 it monitors its consumption through an online system that allows it to achieve maximum energy and economic efficiency. The energy that has been acquired for this year and next, will be 100% renewable.

In its commitment to the environment, Tram of Murcia has contributed to the improvement of air quality in Murcia, preventing the emission of 35,612 tons of CO2 into the air, equivalent to those that would have been produced if these travelers had traveled in vehicles private.

Since its inception, in Tranvía de Murcia 42,394,977 trips have been made, and it consolidates their annual increase, reaching 5,939,712 travelers, in 2019, which represents an increase of 7.16%, compared to 2018 This annual increase in users makes Tranvía de Murcia a punctual, comfortable, efficient and environmentally friendly public transport.
