Several Spanish cities and towns where FCC Medio Ambiente conducts its activities win awards for being the cleanest
The cities of Oviedo, Vigo, San Sebastian, Granada and the towns of Laredo (Cantabria), Llanera and Colunga (Asturias) and Almuñécar (Granada), where FCC Medio Ambiente operates, were recognized by Asociación Técnica para la Gestión de Residuos y Medio Ambiente (ATEGRUS) in the 2016 Silver, Gold and Platinum Awards, given to the localities that stand out for their waste management and urban cleanliness.
To date, more than 600 prize have been awarded through this initiative that was born in 1987 to commemorate European Year of the Environment. On this occasion, there was a wide representation of Mexican municipalities underscoring the close relations of ATEGRUS with Latin American countries as evidenced by the celebration of several Latin American Congresses since 1984 and the ALINVEST Industrial European-Latin American Cooperation Program in place since 2002.
The contest focuses on municipalities, provincial councils, city councils, municipal associations, autonomous regions, engineering companies, environmental consultants, manufacturers of capital goods, and urban waste and cleaning management facilities, universities, etc.
The competition aims to assess and to recognize the measures and works carried out to improve or defend waste management, urban cleanliness in general un our cities an industries, rewarding the efforts and projects to stimulate technological advances and to create awareness that contribute to improving our quality of life and the sustainability of our cities and industries.
Cities and towns where FCC Medio Ambiente conducts its activities award-winners with platinum brooms
San Sebastian City Council
For the large fleet of electric vehicles used for cleaning the city that has contributed to reducing CO2 emissions by 140 tons per year.
Oviedo City Council
For its constant improvement in the quality of this service, with greater mechanization of the work by using the latest generation equipment, sound-proof and with great performance that are greatly adapted to the city’s structure.
Vigo City Council
For removing glass recycling bins in the historic district, providing restaurants with small containers that are picked up by a special vehicle in an established schedule, thereby glass recycling by the sector.
Laredo City Council (Cantabria)
For the pavement scraping service. Using the appropriate machinery, the pavement is scraped superficially, without damaging it, marking it possible to obtain an optimal level of cleanliness without leaving any stains.
Llanera City Council (Asturias)
For its special plastic waste collection, with prior notice, from the livestock sector. This program has created awareness in the sector when separating their waste at the source, increasing the town’s rate of recycling.
Colunga City Council (Asturias)
For implementing a cleaning service in clandestine landfill sites in the town, allocating the material and human resources required for their elimination.

Granada Provincial Council
For Ecocentral Granada, a facility for the treatment of all types of waste collected at households. The upgrading and automation of their facilities have contributed to significantly increasing the rate of recovery of recyclable materials in municipal waste.
Almuñécar City Council (Granada)
For implementing the HORECA system, collecting waste door-to-door, at restaurants that are not able to access recycling sites, removing it personally and coordinating the collection with their opening hours, making the process more efficient.
