Vigo City Council and FCC start a recycling campaign in the Cíes Islands
For this reason, Vigo City Council and FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand for FCC Environment), the concessionaire for cleaning the city and collecting rubbish since 1989, have for another year started the campaign “What goes to Cíes must return from Cíes”. The main purpose is to reduce waste on the Cíes Islands and instil a culture and awareness of recycling among the visitors to the natural park. Rubbish on the Cíes Islands is a danger to the survival of species as well as disrupting the natural balance.
During the second half of July and the first three weeks of August, FCC will distribute 20,000 blue, yellow and green recycling bags to visitors to the Cíes Islands for the environmental protection of this natural landscape.
Thanks to this, paper, plastic packaging and glass can be recycled separately, each by its identifying colour. On their return, the passengers can deposit the rubbish bags in recycling and organic waste containers installed next to the Ría station.
FCC Medio Ambiente carries the waste from the restaurants and camping site on the Cíes Islands, collecting almost 28 tonnes of rubbish in July and August. An average of approximately 1,200 kg is collected at weekends.
