The City Council of Vigo and FCC are launching a recycling campaign on the Cies Islands
Through the campaign 'Whatever you bring to Cies must be taken back home', the City Council of Vigo and FCC Medio Ambiente will distribute 20,000 recycling bags amongst the visitors to the island so that they can correctly separate their waste generated during their stay. The main aim of this initiative is to reduce waste material on the Cies Islands and establish the culture and awareness of recycling amongst the visitors that go to the nature park. Furthermore, the objective is to obtain the declaration as a World Heritage Site for this incredible Galician enclave.
The program will distribute 20,000 recycling bags differentiated by colour (blue, yellow and green) amongst the travellers that head towards the Cies. Thanks to it, they can recycle paper, plastic containers and glass separately, each with their own identifiable colour. On their return, the passengers can deposit their rubbish bags in the containers installed in the Maritime Station of Vigo.
FCC Medio Ambiente is a concessionary company that provides cleaning and collection of rubbish in the city since 1989. It also takes charge of restaurant waste disposal and the Cies campsite, where it collects approximately 18 tons of rubbish during the months of July and August. Only at weekends, the volume of rubbish collected in the area reaches almost 1,200 kilograms.
Recycling to be a World Heritage Site
Abel Caballero, mayor of Vigo, noted during the recycling campaign presentation in Cies that the main objective is that these practices “will become a habit of upkeeping and cleaning the nature park by all the visitors. Waste on Cies presents a danger for the survival of species, in addition to damaging the balance of nature”.
Caballero, furthermore, pointed out that in the following months the Cies Islands will be proposed to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). A nomination that expects that the recycling habits, acquired through the campaign 'Whatever you bring to Cies must be taken back home', are already a reality amongst the visitors.
