FCC's 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Report attains highest application level (A+) recognised by Global Reporting Initiative.
FCC's 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Report attained the highest application level recognised by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI): A+, for the fourth consecutive year. The report, which was approved by the Board of Directors and on which labour representatives have been briefed, is included in the annual report to be presented at the FCC Shareholders' Meeting on Thursday.
GRI establishes requisites for company disclosure of economic, environmental and social performance with a view to obtaining information that is comparable over time and between companies and enabling stakeholders to evaluate companies' non-financial performance. In order to ensure the highest degree of technical quality, credibility, and relevance, the GRI's reporting framework is developed through a consensus-seeking process with participants drawn globally from business, civil society, labour, and professional institutions.
FCC has been publishing its CSR report since 2005 in an exercise of transparency vis-à-vis the stakeholders related to or affected by the company. The 2009, 2008 and 2007 reports were all verified by an independent third party. The report is of particular interest to analysts and investors, ecological and social organisations, CSR observatories, and the media, among others.
The 2009 report describes FCC's role as a citizen services company and emphasizes its commitment to sustainability and its initiatives in various areas, including value creation, corporate governance, integrity, human resources and workplace health and safety, the environment, and corporate citizenship.
Every year the company endeavours to improve the quality and scope of the report and to adapt its content to stakeholder requirements, including potentially adverse indicators such as fines, personnel rotation, declines in investment, etc.
Performance indicators in which the company stood out include: the percentage of local procurement (over 65% of the total) and hiring (over 60%), which favour community development; more than 23 million euro in R&D and innovation; good results (between Good and Excellent) in customer satisfaction surveys; the reduction of accident frequency indices in the Services, Cement and Construction (Spain) divisions; a staff of over 92,000; more than 600,000 training hours;72% and 83% of group activity has environmental and quality certification, respectively; the reduction in waste production and energy consumption; more than 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided; and more than 7 million euro allocated to social projects.
