FCC participates in ECOE research project into energy and buildings

FCC has been chosen to head the ECOE project (Efficiency through energy control and capture) together with URBICSA (the company holding the concession to operate the Ciutat de la Justicia complex in Barcelona and Hospitalet de Llobregat), and the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), a regional leader in R&D for technology related to energy saving and efficiency and renewable energies.

The project, financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, aims to develop and test a new energy management system and methodology for buildings which minimises wiring and energy consumption. This is achieved by interconnecting the lighting and HVAC systems and extracting the necessary residual energy for operation (energy harvesting), minimising wiring needs.

It is a flexible solution which can be adapted to newly constructed and refurbished buildings, reducing costs and the payback period.

This 3-year project has a budget of 1.28 million euro. ECOE will give rise to a series of important innovations, such as the development and installation of energy harvesting systems; safe routing protocols for sensor networks; lighting and climate control systems; and the development of new comfort indicators for end-to-end management of energy demand. The project will be pilot tested on one of the office buildings in the Ciutat de la Justicia complex.
