The value of the awarded contract is around 300 million Euros and is due to be completed within 36 months. The scope includes all electro-mechanical installations, i.e. lighting, ventilation, fire-fighting and air conditioning systems on the two metropolitan railway lines.

This award is a clear example of how the Citizen Services Group is able to harness synergies between its various companies. The FAST consortium, led by FCC Construccion, was chosen for the design and construction of Lines 4, 5 and 6 of the Riyadh Metro, for a total cost in excess of 6,000 million Euros. These three lines include a total of 25 stations, 64.6 kilometres of rail tracks (29.8 kilometres of viaducts, 26.6 kilometres of underground tracks and 8.2 kilometres of above-ground tracks). At present, 30% of the entire project has been completed.

The Riyadh Metro project sets FCC the challenge of designing and building a first-class metropolitan rail network for the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, currently home to 5.7 million residents. By 2030, the population is expected to grow to 8.3 million, so the Riyadh Metro, apart from boosting local economy, is sure to increase Saudis’ quality of life.

Another of the Group's divisions, FCC Aqualia, has also been present in Saudi Arabia since 2011, optimising the water supply network in the Saudi capital, which covers over 6,000 kilometres of land.

Expertise

FCC Industrial has gained significant expertise over 25 years carrying out electromechanical installations in different urban subway lines, both in Spain and abroad.

Riyadh is a further addition to the list of contract work of great added value recently implemented by FCC Construcción’s industrial subsidiary, such as the execution of substations on the Barcelona Metro or the installation of rigid catenary on the Madrid Metro’s new link to Terminal 4 of the Madrid Barajas Adolfo Suarez international airport. Public transport lines such as the Malaga Metro or intermodal stations like Puerta del Sol in Madrid are a representative sample of FCC Industrial’s work. Other notable railway projects it has undertaken include supplying power and building the sub-station in the Pajares tunnels and the renovation of the railway catenary between Montcada and Vic stations.

These projects allow for shorter distances to get people to their destinations quicker, as well as boosting local economic growth and enhancing synergies on the market, all within a framework of sustainability and socially responsible growth.
