FCC showcases the most efficient waste collection truck on the market
FCC, the Citizen Services Group, unveiled the world's most efficient waste collection vehicle at the Smart City Expo World Congress, in Barcelona. The vehicle is a cutting-edge hybrid electric side-loading waste compactor/collector truck which consumes 60% less than a conventional diesel vehicle. It also produces less noise pollution, requires less maintenance and provides better service.
This technology, which is exclusive to FCC, is the result of more than six years of R&D in cooperation with international companies specialised in energy efficiency in the automotive, electric traction and battery industries. Its electric propulsion system achieves the greatest reduction in energy consumption and, therefore, in pollutant emissions, in municipal waste collection duties.
In fact, it is a zero-emission vehicle while collecting municipal waste on city streets. During travel to landfills and waste recycling centres, the truck recharges its batteries using a natural gas engine, i.e. the vehicle runs on the electric motor at all times, during collection, trips and unloading, and uses the thermal engine only to recharge the batteries. The truck does not need a gearbox or direct transmission since the wheels are powered v by the electric motor. This results in triple the energy efficiency of a combustion engine.
An electronic system controls the vehicles' three motors: for traction, for moving the hopper, and for compacting. The hopper is moved using a hydraulic pump powered by an electric motor which only becomes operational when activated by the truck driver, minimising noise from loading and unloading.
Commitment to innovation
The vehicle presented at the Smart City Expo World Congress reflects FCC's commitment to innovation applied to services. FCC's sustainability policy responds directly to the needs of Public Administrations and demands of citizens, who are aware of the importance of managing economic and natural resources sustainably. This policy places FCC, the Citizen Services Group, in a leading position as a provider of municipal services such as household and industrial waste management and road, park and garden maintenance.
