FCC's contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest
FCC's Austrian subsidiary ALPINE built the Baku Crystal Palace in Azerbaijan, where the Eurovision Song Contest was held last Saturday. Construction of the palace, which seats up to 25,000 people, commenced in September 2011 and was completed in May 2012.
The pavilion, which is 230 metres long and 160 metres wide, has a transparent roof to protect spectators from the sun and inclement weather and is equipped with over 80,000 lights.
Construction was completed by a team of close to 1,500. The Crystal Palace was chosen over other candidates by Ictimai TV, Azerbaijan's public television, to host Eurovision and the 16,000 spectators who attended the event.
Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, which won the 2011 Eurovision. The Republic of Azerbaijan is in South Caucasus, bordering the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia and Armenia to the west and Iran to the south.
ALPINE has extensive experience in executing large-scale stadium projects and is a global leader in the construction of sports facilities. Other stadiums and facilities built by FCC include the three stadiums which will host the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship (Poland), a cricket stadium (Dubai), the Allianz Arena (Munich, Germany), Wörthersee stadium (Klagenfurt, Austria), the Joan Camper Sports Complex (Barcelona), the new Real Madrid training complex (Valdebebas, Madrid), and Caja Mágica (Madrid).
