Container plant in Salamanca awarded for innovative idea to enhance safety at work
The FCC-managed Container Selection Plant in Salamanca has received first prize in the Ideas Competition organised by the Asociación de Empresas de Recuperación y Selección de Envases de Residuos Municipales (ASPLARSEM) (Association of Companies Specialised in Municipal Container Waste Recovery and Selection). The aim of this competition is to promote innovative ideas to improve the processes and safety in container waste management companies aimed at employees working at the facilities.
This innovative idea was devised by Felipe Segovia Megar, waste treatment plant manager in Segovia; Javier Vázquez de Prada, treatment plant coordinator of Valladolid and Salamanca; and Teodoro Pérez Pérez, risk prevention technician for the local office, and was presented under the title "Machine halt device on packaging press conveyor belts".
The project consists of installing an electronic device on a conveyor belt and a sensor for the press operator, so that when it enters into an accident danger zone it emits a radiofrequency signal which halts the conveyor belt, thereby minimising the risk of the operator possibly falling, becoming trapped in the conveyor belt and therefore ending up in the press.
The plant in Salamanca treats 3,400 tonnes of container waste each year and provides a service to the entire province. Among other objectives, the FCC Medio Ambiente local office of Castilla y León aims to take measures that guarantee the safety of all workers in line with the Group's Risk Prevention at Work policies. These measures include creating solutions such as the winning idea of the competition, which has already been implemented in other waste treatment plants managed by the local office of Castilla y León.
