FCC Volunteers continue Friday lecture series at Nuestra Casa retirement home in April
FCC's corporate volunteers scheduled a selection of notable guest speakers in April as part of the Friday lectures at the Nuestra Casa retirement home (Collado Villalba, Madrid), built by the Esther Koplowitz Foundation.
On 2 April, Dieter Kiefer, Chairman and CEO of Cementos Portland Valderrivas, delivered a presentation about his homeland entitled "Switzerland, in the heart of Europe". Mr Kiefer discussed the nation's culture and history and answered residents' questions; he also treated attendees to samples of Switzerland's world-famous chocolates.
On 16 April, Eduardo González Gómez, General Manager of FCC Energy, gave a presentation entitled "Energy and development, future challenges". His lecture, which included videos, focused on renewable and non-renewable global energy resources, the roots of the energy issue, the direct relationship between progress and energy, wars over energy resources, renewable energies, and the future challenges we face due to impending exhaustion of coal- and oil-based energies.Upon completion of his presentation, Mr González answered residents' questions and treated them to pastries.
On 23 April, residents attended an eagerly-anticipated lecture called "Third world hospitals" by Joaquín Poch, doctor, professor and director of Madrid's Clinical Hospital. He spoke about his volunteer work performing risky operations in poor countries.
Residents were particularly moved by his presentation, which included photographs.The Esther Koplowitz Foundation donated a da Vinci robot surgical system to Madrid's Clinical Hospital, which has enabled the hospital to perform high-risk operations.
