Juan Béjar visits water treatment facilities in Ávila

To deliver economically sustainable and satisfactory water services to citizens—i.e. to provide them with quality water and ensure that the water returns to the environment in optimal conditions—requires infrastructure with advanced technology, specialised personnel and rigorous customer management and care. Juan Béjar, Vice-Chairman and CEO of FCC, visited FCC Aqualia's water operations in Ávila, where he learned first-hand about the production and customer management structure at all levels.

Mr Béjar was accompanied by Eduardo González, Chairman of FCC Aqualia; Ana Villacañas, General Manager of Organisation, Procurements, Human Resources and IT; Rafael Montes, Director of FCC; Félix Parra, General Manager of FCC Aqualia; and Santiago Lafuente, Manager of Zone I for FCC Aqualia.
The day began with a visit to the city's drinking water treatment plant, which has the capacity to treat 38,400 m3/day and was built by FCC Aqualia for the Castilla y León regional government. The visitors were brought up to speed about the treatment process and the facilities, highlighting innovation such as the flotation system, which is capable of eliminating all algae prior to the purification process, and the activated carbon filters, which eliminate impurities and sub-products in the water, along with any residual odour and flavour. This was followed by a visit to the plant's laboratory, one of the five ENAC-accredited labs in Spain run by FCC Aqualia.

Later, the group toured the recently inaugurated waste water treatment plant, which is outfitted with state-of-the-art systems, including ultrafiltration membranes, magnetic levitation blowers, UV radiation treatment, engine-driven power generators, and NH4 control, evidencing the quality of the effluent once the process was complete.

The group then visited the Municipal Water Service offices in the city centre, where they attended a presentation on technologies applied to grid management and on the structure of the Zone.

At the end of the day, Mr. García Nieto, Mayor of Ávila, received the group at City Hall, where he underlined FCC Aqualia's efficient management of water, which is such an important resource.
