The FCC Construcción project, Plaza de las Glorias in Barcelona, winner of the Albert Vilalta award

The FCC Construcción project, Plaza de las Glorias in Barcelona, has been the winner of the Alberto Vilalta award, delivered within the “VII NIT DE LES INFRAESTRUCTURES”. The award given by the Consell Assesor d'Infraestructures de Catalunya (Chamber of Contractors of Catalonia) summoned the Minister of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, the Regional Minister of Territories, and the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council.

The Plaza de las Glorias Tunnel is 957 meters long and consists of two independent one-way circulation tubes. It consists of two sections: the first is 508 meters long and reaches a maximum depth of 25 meters (passes under 4 existing tunnels: Metro L1 and commuter lines R1, R2, R3/R4); and the second section of 449 meters and with an average depth of 10 meters.

The work has required the execution of 60,000 m² of diaphragm walls —some, in the center of the square, 54 meters deep— and 25,000 m² of concrete pylons. During construction, 25,000 m³ of groundwater had to be pumped daily, equivalent to 10 Olympic swimming pools. It incorporates the latest technology in security measures and tunnel control, with emergency exits separated by a distance of 200 meters and a new tunnel operator control. The works have been carried out maintaining at all times 6 traffic lanes and the circulation of the tram.
