FCC Construcción has reached 25% of excavation progress in the tunnels of NEOM (Saudi Arabia)
FCC Construcción has reached 25% excavation progress on the tunnels it is building in NEOM (Saudi Arabia). This excavation progress represents a distance of 8.7 kilometres. The rock excavated as part of the tunnel construction project is processed for subsequent reuse in the concrete lining that will be used both in the tunnels and in other projects, guaranteeing a minimum impact on the landscape.
In addition, the company is using bulk emulsion technology in the ‘Neom Running Tunnels’ project in Saudi Arabia. This innovative construction technology is based on the use of non-explosive chemical products (emulsion matrix and oxidising agents) transported in special trucks to the tunnel's working face.
In January 2024, FCC Construcción carried out the first bulk emulsion blasting in tunnels in the NEOM project.
About the NEOM project
NEOM, an acronym for New Future, is the name of the new city and economic-technological area, with an area three times the size of Cyprus, that Saudi Arabia is developing in the northwest of the country, opposite the Sinai Peninsula.
NEOM will be a special economic city of 26,500 square kilometres (the size of Cyprus multiplied by three). The main objectives are to attract foreign investment from multinational companies, diversify the Saudi economy, and create a free market space.
