FCC Construcción and FCC Industrial have completed the refurbishment of the ASTA building within the Port of Barcelona, one of the historic headquarters of the Barcelona Port Authority. The modernisation of the building has preserved its structure, whilst completely transforming its exterior and interior layout, turning it into a versatile, efficient and sustainable space. 

Now that the refurbishment is complete, the new ASTA building will continue to house facilities for Port of Barcelona staff, such as Port Police officers. The main building, covering almost 14,000 square metres, will house the Port of Barcelona’s Archives and its Heritage, Conservation and Aids to Navigation departments, whilst allowing the remaining spaces to be let to companies operating in the logistics sector.

The works, which began in September 2021, have cost 20.8 million euros. The project has received public funding under the Plan to Reduce Energy Consumption in the General State Administration, specific objective RSO2.1 of Spain’s 2021–2027 ERDF Multi-regional Programme, co-financed by the European Union (EU).

The refurbishment has prioritised the building’s energy efficiency, minimising its environmental impact. In a pioneering move, the main building’s air-conditioning system has been designed to draw renewable energy from the district heating and cooling network. This network is an innovative example of the circular economy, as it utilises the waste heat generated by the regasification of LNG arriving by ship at the Enagás terminal on the Muelle de la Energia for industrial uses and building climate control, saving 32,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

As a result, the ASTA building will not only consume electricity from 100 per cent renewable sources – as do all buildings belonging to the Barcelona Port Authority – but its air-conditioning system and domestic hot water supply will also run on green energy.
